Start by working out what you already have, because a unit fitted in the last decade or so may need very little doing to it. If it is a metal enclosure with individual protection on each way, the argument for tearing it out is thin. What is often missing is a surge protective device, which can be added into a suitable existing unit without replacing anything else, and occasionally arc fault detection on a specific circuit. Those are additions rather than upgrades, and they cost a fraction of a full change. We would far rather tell you that than sell you a board you did not need.
Where it genuinely is full, there are two routes and the right one depends on the enclosure. Sometimes a way can be freed sensibly. Sometimes a small second unit alongside, fed properly, is the proportionate answer for one new circuit. And sometimes the sensible thing really is a larger unit with room built in, because you are the third person this year to describe another circuit you would like.
