When Something Else Is Already Feeding The House
Plenty of homes around Penn now have panels on the roof, a battery in the garage or both, fitted at some point by somebody else and working away quietly ever since. Changing the consumer unit in a house like that is a different proposition from changing one in a house that only ever takes power in. There is a second source of supply to account for, a connection that has to go back precisely where it belongs, and protective devices that have to suit what an inverter puts through them. None of it is difficult. All of it is easy to get wrong in a hurry.
The practical difference is that the installation can be live from more than one direction. Isolating at the main switch takes the incoming supply away, but panels in daylight and a charged battery are perfectly capable of pushing power back into the house. So the generation and storage side gets shut down deliberately and in the correct order before anything is opened, and the finished board carries clear warning labelling to say that more than one source of supply exists — so whoever opens it next is not relying on having been told.
Where the connection lands matters just as much. A generation or storage circuit is not simply another way in the board: it has to sit somewhere that suits how it works, be protected correctly, and in some installations connect on the supply side rather than through the board at all. If somebody has already made that decision on your house, the right move during a change is usually to reproduce it faithfully rather than quietly improve on it. If it was wrong in the first place, we would far rather tell you than build the same thing again inside a newer enclosure.
The last piece is device selection. Inverters and battery systems can put waveforms through a residual current device that older general-purpose types were never intended to cope with, so protection gets chosen to suit what is genuinely connected rather than out of habit. The fuse board replacement service is set out in full on its own page. For a broader assessment of the installation there is an EICR in Penn, everything else we handle as an electrician in Penn, and separate pages covering EV charger installation in Penn and a house rewire in Penn. The unit itself, and everything already feeding into it.

Panels, inverter, battery and anything else capable of back-feeding, identified and shut down in the right sequence before the cover comes off. Written on the finished unit so the next person knows as well.

Where the existing generation or storage circuit connects, and why. Reproduced faithfully on the new unit, or flagged to you honestly if what we find does not stand up.

Residual current protection selected for what is genuinely connected rather than by default, because inverters and battery systems do not behave like a kettle. Ratings matched to the circuits they serve.

Battery systems need isolating properly and bringing back afterwards. We allow time for that rather than leaving you to work out why the storage has not woken up that evening.

Every circuit tested and its results written onto an Electrical Installation Certificate, a schedule left legible inside the lid, and the notification made for you on our NAPIT registration.
Four stages, with the generation side understood before a date goes in rather than on the morning.
The existing unit, and where anything generating or storing connects into it. Photographs of the inverter and battery arrangement save a good deal of time here.
The unit, the ways, the protective devices the equipment calls for, and anything the testing says needs sorting before the change goes ahead.
Generation and storage taken out of service in the correct order on the day, not simply switched off at the main switch and hoped for.
New unit in, circuits and generation reconnected, everything brought back into service, tested through, certified, and the notification made on your behalf.
Fuse boards, inspections, rewires and chargers all get done by the same electrician in Penn; the towns either side get the same fuse board service.
The things people ask most often before a board change around WV4.
Yes, routinely. It simply means the generation side is taken out of service properly first and put back afterwards, and that the finished unit gets labelled to show the installation has more than one source of supply. That is planning, not difficulty.
They should not. Bringing generation and storage back into service is part of the job and we allow time for it, rather than finishing the board and leaving you to discover that evening that the battery has not come back on.
Not at all. Most of the systems we come across were installed by someone else. We work out how yours is connected, put it back the same way, and say plainly if we find something that does not look right rather than quietly rebuilding it.
Possibly. Some equipment affects how residual current devices behave, so protection ought to be chosen for what is actually connected instead of fitting the same device everywhere. We look at what you have before specifying anything.
It is. A consumer unit change is one of the jobs that has to be notified, and ours go through the Competent Person Scheme under our NAPIT registration. The certificate comes to you and the notification is our job, not yours.
Often it makes sense to, particularly where generation is already on site and the two want to work together. We would look at the whole picture and price them as a single visit rather than two.

ATF Electrics came out to fix our CCTV system that had 2 out of 4 cameras not working. After about 20 minutes he had located the wiring and fixed the issue. Quick job but saved me hundreds. So grateful for the help — will recommend to all my friends and family.

Asked for an emergency call-out on a Sunday afternoon — Adam did not hesitate and came in less than an hour. Found the fault instantly and laid out our options. Very polite, and didn't insist on what should be done — he let us decide.
I had a partial power outage. Adam came over very quickly and sorted out the problem. No further costs beyond the call-out charge, which was explained when I called. Very pleasant, courteous and professional. Will not hesitate to use again.
A lot of Penn housing has picked up panels, a battery or a car charger over the past few years, usually one at a time and usually by different hands. A fuse box replacement in Penn has to take all of that into account — what can feed the house, where it connects, what protects it — and not merely swap the box on the wall.
No charge and no obligation: a written price for replacing the consumer unit in a Penn home, including any solar or battery system already wired into it.
All work is completed by qualified and certified electricians, with relevant approvals and documentation provided where required.
