A separate building — garage, workshop, garden room, even a large shed with a freezer humming in it — wants a dedicated circuit from the main board, run in cable that suits being outside and underground, and terminated in a small board of its own at the far end. What we tend to find instead is an extension lead that became permanent, or a cable teed off a socket circuit and pushed through the wall. It usually works. It is not protected the way it should be, it will show up on any inspection, and it is the thing most likely to cause a nuisance trip that takes half the house down with it.
Cellars raise points of their own. A board or a run of circuits down there is not automatically wrong, but the space is often damp, badly lit and full of things stacked in front of whatever needs reaching.
